From Pop Star to Mentor
Christian Burns Uses His Expertise to Help Aspiring Artists
I remember being eight or nine years old and watching Chuck Norris kick butt on Walker Texas Ranger. I wanted so bad to be as cool and tough as he was. One day, I expressed this to my parents.
“Well, he has spent decades training and building his expertise. If you practiced four to five hours a day, you could probably be at his level by your mid to late twenties,” my dad told me.
As a parent myself now, I look back on this moment and realize the absolute genius of this approach. They weren’t discouraging me or telling me that I couldn’t, but this was the days before YouTube, my small town didn’t have martial arts instructors to guide me and neither of my parents were in a position to teach me.
Though I certainly don’t blame them, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I’d taken up self-defense. It could have saved me a lot of pain in my life and instilled confidence at a young age, not leaving me to finally gaining it in my thirties.
I remember a friend of mine watching Christina Aguilera in secret because her conservative parents didn’t approve of the singer. My friend was determined to train her voice and learn how to make a professional CD or cassette to give to people because she had this passion she wanted to share.
Her problem was a bit different than mine, as it was a craft she genuinely wanted to pursue, but we were both confronted with the same reality. Experts like Chuck and Christina don’t typically share their decades of expertise with random strangers and even if he did, it would probably cost the equivalent of a fleet of rare Porsches to partake in.
Fast forward a few years after my short-lived Chuck Norris hero worship and I would become a girly-girly pop loving teen that would only talk about two things: *N Sync and BBMak. Both groups were crushing the music scene with their powerful vocals and catchy lyrics and both had a member that I was starry eyed over. For BBMak, it was Christian Burns.
Last month, I had the pleasure of interviewing Christian for my YouTube channel on mental health where he confessed that he had immensely struggled with depression and anxiety during the height of the group’s fame.
He also told me of an amazing project he recently launched called Record Ready Vocals. The more he divulged, the more I sat slack jawed. Record Ready Vocals is a course that teaches individuals of all levels how to elevate their vocal production quality to a professional level regardless of equipment, experience or studio accessibility (shout out to all the people who have been using lockdown as an excuse to slack on their dreams!)
My inner child was blown away. This amazingly talented man who sold millions of albums and had a number one single on the charts in the US for months with BBMak, has worked with many of the biggest names in electronic music, has had his work featured in TV shows and in blockbuster movies and has played sold out shows all over the world for twenty years is willing to walk people through his process. That’s unheard of.
I peeped at the site after we spoke expecting to see an outrageous price tag and another gimmicky sales pitch because I was pretty much in denial that such a successful person could really give a rat’s tail about the success of other dreamers.
Instead, I find a reasonably priced, easy to follow course with dozens of happy students, excited to have someone who has already done the footwork help them go from having a pipedream and no direction to being able to understand and implement the steps necessary to achieve their recording goals. Even though I am about as computer illiterate as they come and not particularly familiar with the world of music production, the system of recording, processing and arranging vocals was simplified into bite-size chunks that even I could grasp.
This is seriously the kind of thing that college professors with minimal experience are teaching and charging thousands of dollars for and here you have a superstar with twenty years of experience laying out his roadmap. I crushed on Christian as a teenager and related to him as we discussed our mental health struggles. Learning of this program gave me immense respect for him.
I wish Chuck or Christina had offered their expertise back in the day, but I can say with complete confidence that Record Ready Vocals, Christian’s personal guidance and the supportive built-in community will skyrocket your progress. Whether you are the giddy and motivated newcoming artist who needs a little direction or the frustrated expert feeling stuck trying to put the finishing touches on their material – there is something for everyone within this program.
Stop using quarantine as an excuse to binge Netflix, gain twenty pounds and sweep your dreams under the rug. This is the course the aspiring artist in you has been waiting for.
