Quapaw Nation Mourns the Passing of Former Chairman John Berrey
The Quapaw Nation and surrounding communities are mourning the loss of former Chairman John Berrey, who passed away over the weekend. Known for his bold leadership and vision, Berrey served as Chairman of the Quapaw Nation for nearly two decades, transforming the tribe into one of the most economically diverse and influential in the region.
During his tenure, Berrey led the tribe through a period of historic growth and revitalization. He oversaw the creation of multiple business ventures, expanded tribal agriculture and retail operations, and played a key role in the development of the $350 million Saracen Casino Resort in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The resort, which opened in 2020, brought thousands of jobs to the area and represented one of the largest tribal investments in Arkansas history.
Berrey was also instrumental in advancing tribal sovereignty and land rights, helping secure legal and economic victories that strengthened the Quapaw Nation’s independence. His leadership extended beyond business, with efforts focused on cultural preservation and expanding opportunities for tribal citizens.
On social media, messages of remembrance and respect poured in from across Oklahoma and Arkansas. The Quapaw Nation released a statement announcing his passing, saying, “With a heavy heart, the Berrey family is saddened to share that previous Quapaw Nation Business Committee Chairman John Berrey passed away.” Friends, colleagues, and community members shared tributes describing him as a visionary who cared deeply for his people and the future of the tribe.
